History and facts:

Rzeszow gained civic rights in 1354. The heyday of the city occurred at the end of the 16th and the early 17th centuries, since the 15th century plentiful Jewish agglomeration. In the years 1772-1918 it was located in the Austrian territory. In 1939, 45% of the inhabitants were Jews. In the period 1942 - 1944, there were two forced labor camps here, mainly for the Jews, two ghettos, German Penitentiary. Since 1945 it has been the seat of the province. Now it has about 160 000 inhabitants. It is a large industrial, research and cultural centre in this region, a railway and road junction (E371, E40). In a nearby village, Jesionka, an airport is located.

Location:

Located on the borderland of the Rzeszowskie Uphill (Pogórze Rzeszowskie) and the under-Carpathian Proglacial Stream Valley (Pradolina podkarpacka), by the Wisłok River and its side streams.

Architecture:

Well-known for the old complex of the Piarists monastery from the 18th century where the District Museum was arranged. Valuable monuments of the city are also the Bernardines monastic complex with the parish church and synagogues: the old town synagogue (17th century) the so-called the Little One and the new town synagogue (1705 -10, rebuilt in 1954 - 1963) the so-called the Large synagogue. Significant for the city is also the castle (1906) - the seat of district governors, the seat of the museum, with the greatest in Poland collection of 800 icons, and Beksiński's paintings, with preserved early-Baroque tower of the old quadrilateral palace (1620), as well as fortification ramparts (1st half of the 17th century).

Cultural life:

In Rzeszow there are theatres ("W. Siemaszkowa's and "Puppet and Actor") as well as a concert hall, a museum and galleries. The inhabitants and tourists can take rest in the leisure areas by the River in the Park of Culture and Leisure or by an artificial lake created by the river where a marina is located. The city also offers visiting of an interesting underground route just under Rzeszów's Market Square.
